In Ironton, Missouri, Arcadia Academy has watched the world pass by for more than 150 years. Founded in 1846 by Jerome C. Berryman as a Methodist high school, the Academy later became a Union hospital during the Civil War. In 1877, Ursuline nuns took over, transforming it into a girls’ school that operated until 1971, followed by a daycare until the nuns quietly left after a public auction in 1991. Now privately owned and preserved as a National Historic landmark, the massive complex remains, said to be haunted by the spirits of nuns, priests, and others whose stories ended tragically within its walls. Come walk these halls, where reports of floating nuns ,shadow figures, disembodied voices calling, and unexplained activity are to occur. Some doors were never meant to stay closed but these remain open anyway.
